Who is Jonathan?

Jonathan Starr (he/they) is a choreographer, dancer, and sound maker, born in the UK and based in Stockholm.

In 2019, he relocated to Sweden, working at Norrdans under the artistic director Martin Forsberg. With Norrdans he performed in work choreographed by notable artists such as Jeanine Durning, Stina Nyberg, OR/ELLER, Martin Forsberg, Ioannis Mandofounis, Nicole Beutler and Ludvig Daae.

As a performer and collaborator, Jonathan’s work has taken on many forms: performance, podcasts, albums, workshops, and sound walks.

His work is process-driven and often unfolds around themes of non-seriousness, birds, magic, and documentation. They move between forms: dancing, composing, field recording, and drawing, as ways of noticing and re-noticing the world.

Across their practice, Jonathan explores what it means to pay attention. They work slowly, allowing sound, movement, and mark-making to become translations of place and invitations to look again. Their projects often begin from simple gestures, walking, listening, sketching, imitating birds, that expand into layered compositions.
